Guarneri, Peter Of Mantua
B. 1655, Cremona, d. 1720, Mantua
The elder son and pupil of Andrea. Moved to Mantua around 1680, to an appointment as a court musician. Continued making violins, although less prolifically than other members of the family, and developed a distinctive and attractive model, sometimes ornamented with inlay, and always with a particularly fine red varnish. Not known to have produced any violas or cellos. The most refined craftsman of the family, he founded the Mantuan school, in which he was followed by Zanotti, Camilli, and Balestrieri.
