Guarneri, Giuseppe Filius Andreae

B. 1666, d. 1739?, Cremona.

Younger son and pupil of Andrea, as indicated by the suffix 'filius Andreae' which appears on his label and distinguishes him from his son, also named Giuseppe. His work developed gradually along Stradivarian lines, using a particularly rich varnish. Made many fine violins and cellos, less well-finished than Amati, but with great distinction. Although in poor health in later years, he continued to provide scrolls for the violins made by his son Giuseppe 'del Gesu' up until his death.
