Dodd, John Kew
b. 1752
Originally a gunlock fitter and a money scale maker, he then turned his hand to bowmaking (c. 1780) and became one of the greatest of the English bow makers. Dodd produced two distinct types of bow, swan and hammer headed. Those with the hammer head are usually stamped Dodd, whereas those with swan heads are often subsequently branded by the dealers/makers who had commissioned them. It has been suggested that a fondness for drink led Dodd to end his days in the workhouse.
